Get Involved in Programs to Help Clean Up Local Waterways

Volunteer Programs

If you want to help protect the rivers and streams that wind through Elkhart County, there are many ways to get involved. Here are a few:

  • Become a Hoosier Riverwatch volunteer water monitor. Contact Nancy Brown at the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District (574-533-3630 ext. 3).
  • Help mark storm drains with a message that reminds people that these drains go to local waterways. Contact Eric Kurtz at eric.kurtz@in.nacdnet.net or 574-533-3630 ext. 3 if you have a school, church, or other civic group that would like to do this.
  • Join a local watershed protection group: the Elkhart River Alliance or the Friends of the St. Joe River.
  • Participate in a River clean-up: Contact the Elkhart EnviroCorps or one of the watershed groups listed above.

Educational Opportunities

Further educational opportunities can be found at the Soil and Water Conservation District education page. This includes information for educators who want to include water quality in their curriculum.

If you would like to schedule a speaker on water quality, contact Eric Kurtz at eric.kurtz@in.nacdnet.net or 574-533-3630 ext. 3.
