Free Stormwater Calendar Promotes Water Quality
At the end of 2007, the Greater Elkhart County Stormwater Partnership distributed 10,000 copies a free, two-year calendar called "Elkhart County Waters: Ours to Protect." The calendar uses pictures donated by local photographers, combined with information boxes, to increase awareness of our rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands, and how to protect them. Most of the photos were entered in the Elkhart County Parks Department's 2007 photo contest.
Staff from the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District, Elkhart County Parks, City of Elkhart's Environmental Center and EnviroCorps program, and Goshen Parks Department all contributed to the project.
More than just pretty pictures
The calendar contains a lot of useful and educational information. Some of the topics covered include:
- The answer to the question: what is a watershed?
- Tips for conserving water at home.
- Information about recycling and household hazardous waste disposal.
- Information about topics such as smart growth, low impact development, biological monitoring, construction site runoff, and agricultural conservation.
- Information about the backyard Certified Wildlife Habitat and Indiana Classified Forest programs.
- Phone numbers and web sites to pursue topics in more depth.
Limited copies may still be available. For more information, please contact Eric Kurtz at 574-533-3630, ext. 3.
